The best AI extensions for Chrome

Summarizing pages, rewriting text, translating or having AI do tasks for you: these are the best options to bring AI into your browser.

AI is no longer just a chat tab: it can live inside your browser, next to what you read and write. But there are so many extensions that it's hard to know which to choose.

We've gathered eight well-known options, each with a different focus, using data from their official pages and store listings. We're the NexoPad team, which is on the list, but we'll tell you who each one is best for.

The 8 options, one by one

Gemini in Chrome

Not an extension: it's built into Chrome. It summarizes pages, compares several tabs and helps you draft in Gmail. It's rolling out gradually by country, and on work accounts an administrator must allow it.

ChatGPT

OpenAI's official extension connects the ChatGPT desktop app with Chrome: it adds a side chat and can use selected text or your tabs. Watch out: there are many unofficial copies with that name on the store.

Claude in Chrome

Anthropic's extension reads pages, clicks and fills in forms to complete tasks for you. It's available on Claude's paid plans.

Grammarly

One of the most popular writing assistants: it checks grammar, tone and clarity as you type, and rewrites sentences with AI. It has free and paid plans. Especially strong in English.

Monica

A sidebar to chat with several AI models, summarize pages and write. Useful if you want to try different models without switching tools.

Sider

Another sidebar with several AI models to chat about the page you're viewing, read documents and write.

Merlin

Focused on summarizing: web pages, YouTube videos and PDFs. It lets you save your own prompts to use with "/".

NexoPad

Select any text and fix it, make it formal, summarize it or translate it right there. It works with your own key from 10 providers and also stores your replies, notes and links.

NexoPad: AI right where you're writing

Most AI extensions open a separate chat. NexoPad works on the text you select: an article, a customer's email or your own draft. Click the lightning icon and choose an action, like Summarize, Formal, Soften or Translate, or type your own instruction.

It uses your own key from an AI provider (Groq, OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, Mistral, DeepSeek and others), so you choose the model and only pay your provider for what you use. And the same extension holds your shortcut templates, notes and links.

Summarize any paragraph without leaving the article.
Or translate it into the language you choose.

How to choose your AI extension

  • If you don't want to install anything, try Gemini in Chrome.
  • If you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude, their official extensions get more out of your subscription.
  • If you mostly write in English, Grammarly.
  • If you read and summarize lots of content, Merlin, Monica or Sider.
  • If you want to improve and reply to text where you're writing, NexoPad. You'll find ideas in our guide to replying to emails with AI.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI extensions safe?

Only install official extensions or ones from well-known companies, check the permissions they request and never paste passwords or sensitive data into any AI.

Which ones are free?

Gemini in Chrome needs nothing installed and Grammarly has a free plan. Monica, Sider and Merlin install for free from the store and offer paid plans: check their websites for what free usage includes. Claude in Chrome requires a paid plan. NexoPad has a free plan and its AI uses your own key.

How do I spot the official ChatGPT extension?

Check that the developer is OpenAI. There are many unofficial extensions with similar names on the store.

What does using AI with my own key mean?

You create a key with the AI provider you prefer and paste it into NexoPad. That way you choose the model and pay the provider directly. We explain it in the AI providers guide.
