How to save ChatGPT (and other AI) answers in your notes
The AI gave you exactly the explanation, draft or list you needed. Here's how to save it so you can find it again next month, instead of digging through hundreds of chats.
You ask ChatGPT for an email, an explanation or a list of ideas, and the answer is good. A week later you can't remember which chat it was in, and scrolling through dozens of similar titles takes longer than asking again.
Here's what ChatGPT already offers to save its answers, where those options fall short, and how to save just the useful part in your notes with NexoPad, along with a link back to the chat it came from. It works the same with any other AI you use in your browser.
What ChatGPT already offers to save answers
Before installing anything, it's worth knowing what ChatGPT gives you. Your chats stay in the history in the sidebar, and there are a few ways to keep or share them. All of them work with whole conversations, not with a single paragraph.
- Search your history. The sidebar search finds chats by words in their title or messages. Handy if you remember a specific word from the answer.
- Share a link. The Share button creates a link to the chat as it is at that moment. Messages you add later don't show up unless you update the link. You can review your links in Settings > Data controls.
- Export your data. In Settings > Data controls > Export data you can request a copy of your whole history. You get an email with a link to a ZIP file. It can take a few days to arrive, and the link expires after 24 hours.
- Archive a chat. It removes the chat from the sidebar without deleting it. You'll find it in Settings > Data controls > Archived chats, and it still shows up in search.
Save just the useful part with Alt+C
Select the part of the answer you want
On the chat page, select the paragraph, list or text you want to keep. No need to grab the whole answer: keep only what you'll actually use.
Press Alt+C
NexoPad saves the selected text as a clip and shows a short confirmation. You stay in the chat, without switching tabs.
The clip keeps its source
Each clip is saved as a note in the Clips folder, with a line at the end showing the title and link of the page it came from. If you ever want to see the full conversation again, just click that link.
Find it when you need it
Press Alt+S on any page to open your notes and search for the clip, or open it from the Clips tab in the side panel. All the details are in the Clips guide.
Organize your answers in the Notebook
Once you have a few clips, press Alt+Q to open the Notebook: a full page where you can edit calmly, change the title, add bold and lists, and move each note into the right folder.
A simple idea is to create folders by topic, like "Emails", "Explanations" or "Blog ideas", and add tags so you find things faster. You can also combine several clips into one longer note with your own comments. For more ideas, see our guide to taking and organizing notes in the browser.
Turn the prompts you repeat into shortcuts
Often the thing worth saving isn't the answer but the question. If every week you ask the AI to summarize a text in the same format, save that prompt as a text shortcut in NexoPad.
For example, create the shortcut /summary with a text like "Summarize this text in five clear, simple bullet points: {{paragraph:Text}}". When you type /summary in the message box of any AI chat, NexoPad asks you for the text, drops it in place and types the full prompt. You can use other variables too, like {{input:Topic}} for a short detail or {{dropdown:Tone|friendly|formal}} to pick from a list. They're all in the variables guide.
What NexoPad doesn't do
- It saves only the text you select. It doesn't save images, attached files or charts from the answer.
- It doesn't save whole conversations automatically or read your ChatGPT history: it doesn't connect to your account on any AI.
- It doesn't guarantee code formatting. If you save a code block, check the indentation before using it.
- It doesn't export your notes to files. They're saved to your account and you see them in all your browsers.
- Notes are stored as plain text. Don't save passwords or sensitive data the AI helped you prepare.
Which option to choose?
| What it saves | Best for | |
|---|---|---|
| Search your history | Nothing new: it searches your chats | Finding a chat when you remember a word |
| Shared link | The whole chat up to that moment | Showing a conversation to someone else |
| Export data | Your whole history in a ZIP | Keeping a backup of your account |
| Archive | The whole chat, out of the sidebar | Tidying the sidebar without deleting anything |
| NexoPad clip | Only the text you pick, with its link | Keeping the useful part and finding it fast |
| NexoPad shortcut | Your prompt, with variables | Asking the same thing in any AI |
Frequently asked questions
How do I save a whole ChatGPT conversation?
You can create a link with the Share button or request a copy of all your data in Settings > Data controls > Export data. NexoPad doesn't save whole chats: it's built to save the part you care about.
Can I export just one chat?
ChatGPT's export covers your whole history at once. To keep a specific part, select it and save it as a clip with Alt+C.
Does it work with other AI tools besides ChatGPT?
Yes. Clipping with Alt+C works on almost any page where you can select text, so it works with any AI chat you use in your browser.
Are images generated by the AI saved too?
No. NexoPad saves only the selected text and the page link. You'll need to download images separately.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Brave. Your notes are saved to your account and you see them in all of them.
Is NexoPad free?
Yes, you can install it and start saving clips and shortcuts for free.
