How to save text from a website

A quote for a report, a figure for a proposal or a paragraph you want to reread. Here are four ways to save it without losing it.

We read a lot in the browser, and we often find something we want to keep: a fact, an idea, an explanation. Copying it into a loose document works, but it ends up lost among dozens of files.

Here are four ways to save it, depending on what you need: sharing a snippet, reading later, saving the whole page or building your own collection of clips.

Chrome lets you share a link that goes straight to a passage on the page. Select the text, right-click and choose Copy link to highlight. Anyone who opens the link will see that text highlighted.

It's ideal for sending a quote to a colleague, but it doesn't save the text: if the page changes or disappears, it's gone. If the option doesn't appear, that page isn't supported.

2. Chrome's Reading List

If you want to read the whole page later, add it to the Reading List from the bookmarks menu or by right-clicking the tab. You'll find it in Chrome's side panel, separate from your bookmarks.

It's perfect for pending articles, but it saves the whole page, not the passage you cared about.

3. Save the page as PDF

To keep a copy that won't change, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and choose Save as PDF as the destination. You'll have the page exactly as it was that day.

It's useful for important documents, but piling up PDFs of whole pages makes it hard to find the fact you were looking for.

4. Clip the text with a shortcut

With NexoPad you select the passage you want on any page and press Alt+C. The text is saved instantly as a clip, with a link to the source page, and a notice confirms it.

All your clips live in the side panel's Clips tab, where you can browse and search them whenever you need them. That way you have your own collection of quotes and facts, separate from your bookmarks and always at hand.

Select the text, press Alt+C and it's saved.
