NexoPad vs Auto Text Expander
Two Chrome extensions to type faster with shortcuts. One is simple and free; the other goes much further. Here are the differences.
If you search for "Auto Text Expander" on the Chrome Web Store, you'll find a free, simple extension that turns abbreviations into text: type ty and you get "Thank you for your message". It does the basics very well.
NexoPad does the same, but adds a box to fill in variable details, a search so you don't have to remember shortcuts, sync with your account and, on top of that, notes, links and AI. Here's when each one makes sense.
Quick summary
- Auto Text Expander (by Free Software Utilities) is free, stores your shortcuts on your computer and includes macros for the clipboard, URL, date and cursor position.
- NexoPad works on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Brave, syncs your snippets with your account and asks for variable details in a box before inserting.
- If you only need simple abbreviations on a single computer, Auto Text Expander does the job.
- If you work with real templates, across several computers or with other people, NexoPad will save you more time.

The big difference: variables and search
With Auto Text Expander, each abbreviation always inserts the same text. If your template includes the customer's name, you have to type it in by hand afterwards.
In NexoPad you mark those parts as variables, for example {{input:Name}} or {{dropdown:Reason|Delay|Error|Other}}, and when you type the shortcut a box opens to fill them in. And if you forget a shortcut, type // in any field and search for it by name or by a word from the text.
When to choose each

You only use Chrome on one computer, your shortcuts are fixed texts and you want something completely free and simple.

Your templates include details that change, you work across several browsers or computers, you want your notes and links at hand or you share templates with your team.
