Extensions add features to Microsoft Edge: blocking ads, saving links, typing faster or translating pages. You manage all of them from one page: edge://extensions.

This guide shows you how to open that page, install extensions (including Chrome Web Store ones), pin them to the toolbar, change their keyboard shortcuts, and what to do if an extension gets turned off or goes missing. The steps are the same on Windows and Mac.

Short answer

Type edge://extensions in the address bar and press Enter. There you see all your extensions: you can turn them on or off, open their Details, remove them and change their shortcuts under Keyboard shortcuts. To install new ones, go to the Edge Add-ons store (microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons).

2How to open the Edge extensions page

1

Type the address

The fastest way: type edge://extensions in the address bar and press Enter. It works the same on Windows and Mac.

2

Or use the Edge menu

Select Settings and more (the three dots … at the top right), choose Extensions and then Manage extensions.

3

Or the puzzle-piece button

To the right of the address bar there's the Extensions button, shaped like a puzzle piece. Click it to see your extensions and, at the bottom, Manage extensions.

What's on the Extensions page

On the left you have the Search installed extensions box, My extensions (the list of what you've installed) and Keyboard shortcuts. Below them, the Get extensions for Microsoft Edge link opens the store.

At the bottom there are two toggles: Developer mode, which you only need if you build extensions, and Allow extensions from other stores, which lets you install extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

The Edge Extensions page: the menu on the left, the two toggles at the bottom.

3Install an extension from Edge Add-ons

1

Open the store

On edge://extensions, select Get extensions for Microsoft Edge, or go straight to microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons. The store is called Edge Add-ons.

2

Find the extension

Type its name in the store's search box and open its page. You'll see the description, screenshots, ratings and the developer.

3

Select Get

Click the Get button. Edge shows you the permissions the extension asks for. Read them carefully.

4

Confirm

If you're happy with them, select Add extension. A few seconds later it shows up under the Extensions button in the toolbar.

Every extension has its own page on Edge Add-ons with a Get button.

4Install Chrome Web Store extensions in Edge

1

Turn on the toggle

On edge://extensions, at the bottom left, turn on Allow extensions from other stores. Edge warns you that Microsoft doesn't verify extensions from other stores; select Allow to continue.

2

Open the Chrome Web Store

Go to the Chrome Web Store (chromewebstore.google.com) in Edge and find the extension. If you didn't turn on the toggle first, Edge may show a banner at the top so you can do it from there.

3

Select Add to Chrome

On the extension's page, select Add to Chrome. Even though it says "Chrome", it installs in Edge.

4

Review the permissions

Edge shows you the permissions it asks for. Select Add extension to finish.

Warning

Only install extensions from developers you trust, and check the permissions. An extension that can "read and change site data" can see what you type on the pages where it runs.

5Pin an extension to the toolbar

When you install an extension, it lives inside the Extensions button (the puzzle piece). If you use it often, it's handier to keep it in view.

Click the Extensions button and, next to the extension's name, click the eye icon (Show in toolbar). To take it off the toolbar, right-click its icon and choose Hide from toolbar, or click the eye again. Hiding it doesn't turn it off: it keeps working.

6Turn off an extension, see its Details and use it in InPrivate

On edge://extensions, every extension has a toggle. Switch it off to turn off the extension without deleting it: it stops working, but keeps its data, and you can turn it back on whenever you like.

Select Details below the extension for more options. Under Site access you decide where it can run: When you click the extension, on a specific site or On all sites. You can also use Automatically allow access on the following sites for a list of pages.

The same Details page has Allow in InPrivate. By default, extensions don't run in InPrivate windows; tick this box only for the ones you really need there.

Tip

For a quicker way to change site access, click the Extensions button, open … More actions next to the extension and hover over This can read and change site data.

7Extension keyboard shortcuts: edge://extensions/shortcuts

Many extensions open with a key combination. To see and change them, type edge://extensions/shortcuts or select Keyboard shortcuts in the left menu.

Each extension lists its commands with their shortcut. Click the pencil next to a shortcut and press the new keys. If a command shows Not set, you can give it a shortcut yourself. On the right, the drop-down shows where it works: In Edge (only while the browser is active) or global (from other programs too), if the extension allows it.

Each extension's shortcuts: the pencil to change them and the In Edge drop-down.

Tip

If two extensions use the same shortcut, only one works. Change one of them here. For more handy shortcuts, see our list of Chrome keyboard shortcuts: almost all of them work the same in Edge.

8Remove an extension from Edge

1

From the toolbar

Right-click the extension's icon and choose Remove from Microsoft Edge. Confirm with Remove.

2

From the Extensions button

Click the Extensions button, open … More actions next to the extension and choose Remove from Microsoft Edge. Confirm with Remove.

3

From edge://extensions

On the extensions page, every extension has its own Remove button. If you only want to pause it, switch off its toggle instead.

9If an extension doesn't work or is missing

  • Edge turned it off. Edge turns off extensions that try to change your search engine, new tab page or other settings without permission. If you trust it, switch its toggle back on at edge://extensions.
  • You can't see it in the toolbar. Check that it's turned on and look inside the Extensions button: it may be hidden. Click the eye to show it.
  • It stopped working. Turn it off and on again, restart Edge, or remove it and install it again.
  • There's a briefcase or "managed by your organization". Your company or school manages it with policies: you can't remove or turn it off yourself. You can see the active policies at edge://policy. Talk to your IT team.
  • You can't install Chrome Web Store extensions. Check that Allow extensions from other stores is on. On work computers, the administrator can block it.

11An example of a useful Edge extension: NexoPad

NexoPad is an extension for Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Brave that brings together your text shortcuts (snippets) with fill-in fields, your notes, your saved links and tab groups, and an AI assistant. In Edge it can open in the sidebar.

It's free to install from its Edge Add-ons page. Its default shortcuts in Edge are Ctrl+Space to open it, Alt+Q for the full Notebook, Ctrl+Shift+Space for snippets and Alt+S for notes; you can change them at edge://extensions/shortcuts. If you want your text shortcuts outside the browser too, there's NexoPad for Windows.
