NexoPad vs PhraseExpress: the browser-based alternative
PhraseExpress has been helping people type less on Windows for over twenty years. If you now do almost everything in the browser, a different approach may suit you better.
PhraseExpress is a classic text expander: you type an abbreviation and the full text appears in any program on your computer. It runs on Windows and Mac, has an iPhone and iPad app, and offers macros, a clipboard manager and AI integration.
NexoPad does the same with shortcuts, but inside the browser, and adds notes, links and AI to the same extension. Here's an honest look at how they differ so you can choose well.
Quick summary
- PhraseExpress is a desktop program: its phrases work in any Windows or Mac application, not just the browser.
- It's free for personal use, but if you use it for work you need a one-time paid license in one of its three editions: Standard, Professional or Enterprise.
- NexoPad is an extension for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Brave, with a free plan plus Pro and Teams plans.
- NexoPad syncs with your account and brings together shortcuts, notes with reminders, links and AI; PhraseExpress syncs through Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, a network folder or SQL Server.

How PhraseExpress licensing works
PhraseExpress isn't a subscription. You pay once and the license is yours for life, with 12 months of updates included. After that year the program keeps working, but to get new versions you need to renew maintenance, at a discount.
Personal use is free, with all the features of the stand-alone version. But if you use it for work (any activity you get paid for) you need a license. According to their website, after 30 days license reminders start to appear if you use it in a professional setting, such as a company-managed device, a work account or remote desktop.
Each license covers one person on up to three computers with the same user name. Windows and Mac licenses are purchased separately, and the Mac editions don't include exactly the same features as the Windows ones.
What NexoPad offers
NexoPad doesn't require installing a program: it's a browser extension. You create your templates in the popup's Snippets view, with formatting, and give them a shortcut. When you type it on any website, a small form opens so you can fill in what changes, such as a name or an option from a list. Other details, like a delivery date, are calculated for you. All the options are in the variables guide.
If you can't remember a shortcut, type // right in the field or press Ctrl+K and search for it by name. Everything syncs with your account, so your templates are on any computer as soon as you sign in. And with NexoPad Teams you share a template vault with your team, with roles and approvals, without setting up shared folders or servers.
When to choose each
Choose PhraseExpress if…
You need your phrases outside the browser (Word, desktop Outlook, business software), want macros to automate Windows or a clipboard manager, or your company needs SQL Server or works with remote desktops.
Choose NexoPad if…
You do almost everything in the browser (Gmail, CRM, support tools), would rather not install programs, want automatic sync and a free plan, or like having notes, links and AI next to your shortcuts.
How to move your phrases from PhraseExpress to NexoPad
Install NexoPad and sign in
That way your templates sync across all your browsers.
Start with the phrases you use most
There's no direct importer from PhraseExpress. The most practical approach is to recreate the ten or twenty phrases you use every day first, keeping the same shortcuts if you like.
Turn variable data into variables
Your form fields become variables like {{input:Name}} or a dropdown list. If you relied on complex macros, check which ones you really need in the browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is PhraseExpress free?
For personal use, yes. If you use it for work, their website says you need to buy a license, which is a one-time payment with one year of updates included.
Does NexoPad work outside the browser?
No. NexoPad is a browser extension. If you need to expand text in desktop programs, PhraseExpress or Espanso are better options.
Can I use PhraseExpress and NexoPad together?
Yes, but use different shortcuts in each so they don't both fire when you type the same thing in the browser.
