Comparison

NexoPad vs Espanso

Two very different ways to never type the same thing twice: an open-source desktop program and a browser extension. Here's which one fits you.

Espanso is a favorite text expander among technical users: it's free, open source and works in any program on your computer. In exchange, you configure it by editing text files.

NexoPad works inside the browser and is managed through a visual interface, no files involved. We compare them honestly so you can choose well.

Quick summary

  • Espanso is free, open source (GPL-3.0 license) and works on Windows, macOS and Linux, in any app on your computer.
  • Its snippets are defined in YAML files: very powerful if you're comfortable with config files, less convenient if not.
  • NexoPad works in the browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Brave) and is set up through a visual interface.
  • NexoPad syncs with your account and adds notes, links, AI and teams; Espanso syncs by moving its folder to Dropbox or Google Drive.

The big difference: setup

In Espanso, each snippet is an entry in a text file with a trigger (for example :sig) and the text that replaces it. It's lightning fast for people comfortable with files, allows advanced things like running scripts or using regular expressions, and everything stays on your computer. But one indentation mistake is enough to break a snippet.

In NexoPad you create snippets in the popup's Snippets view: type the formatted text, choose the shortcut and add variables with a click. Find them with // or Ctrl+K, and they sync automatically across all your browsers.

A snippet with variables, created without touching a file.
With Ctrl+K you find it from any website.

When to choose each

Choose Espanso if…

You need your snippets outside the browser too (code editor, terminal, desktop apps), you're comfortable with config files and you want something completely free and local.

Choose NexoPad if…

You mostly work in the browser, prefer a visual interface, want automatic sync or to share templates with your team, and like having notes, links and AI in the same place.
