Comparison

Grammarly alternatives

Grammarly is the best-known writing assistant, but not the only one. We compare six alternatives, depending on your language, budget and needs.

Grammarly checks grammar, spelling and tone, and rewrites sentences with AI. For years it only worked in English; since 2025 it also checks Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

Still, there are alternatives that may suit you better depending on language, price or what you need. We compare them using Chrome Web Store data and their official websites. We're the NexoPad team, which is on the list.

The 6 alternatives, one by one

LanguageTool

Grammar and style checker supporting over 25 languages. Around 2 million users on Chrome and a free plan.

DeepL Write

Included in the DeepL extension alongside the translator. Improves the style and clarity of your writing in several languages.

QuillBot

Very popular for paraphrasing (around 6 million users on Chrome). Checks grammar and has a free plan.

ProWritingAid

Beyond checking, it produces detailed style reports. Designed mainly for long texts in English.

Wordtune

Suggests several ways to rewrite each sentence. Still active, although it's rarely updated.

NexoPad

Select your text and click Fix, Formal or Soften: AI improves it right in the field where you're typing. Works with your own AI key.

NexoPad: fix and improve text where you write it

NexoPad isn't a checker that underlines as you type, but AI you call when you need it. Select your draft on any website (email, your help desk, a CRM), click the lightning icon and choose Fix. The text is replaced with the corrected version, and if you don't like it you click Undo.

It works with your own key from an AI provider and in any language that model understands. You also get actions to make the text more formal, friendlier, shorter or to translate it, and the same extension stores your replies, notes and links.

Your draft, with mistakes, selected with the AI bar.
The same text, fixed in one click.
