Holiday greetings for clients

A well-written end-of-year message strengthens your client relationships. Here are messages for every type of client and tips to make them sound personal.

The holiday greeting is one of the few times a year you write to clients without selling anything. That's why it works: it's a simple way to say thank you and remind them you're there.

The risk is sounding like a mass email. Here are six messages, from the most formal to the friendliest, plus tips to personalize them without spending hours.

Tips before you write

  • Send it in the first half of December, before inboxes fill up and people go on vacation.
  • Use each client's name and, if you can, mention something you did together this year.
  • Don't sell: no offers or discounts in the same message.
  • Respect beliefs: if you're not sure whether they celebrate Christmas, "happy holidays" is the safest choice.
  • Sign with a person's name, not just the company name.

Frequently asked questions

When should I send holiday greetings to clients?

In the first half of December, around the 15th at the latest. A digital message can go out a little later.

"Merry Christmas" or "Happy holidays"?

If you know your client well, either works. If not, "happy holidays" includes everyone.

Can I use it to offer a discount?

Better not in the same greeting: it comes across as advertising. If you want to make an offer, send it in a separate message.

What about the team or colleagues?

You can use a warmer tone and mention the year's achievements. For team messages in chat, see our guide to quick replies in Slack and Teams.
