How to ask customers for reviews

Many happy customers would leave a review if you asked. Here's when and how to do it, within the rules, with messages ready to use.

Reviews strongly influence people deciding where to buy or whom to hire. And most satisfied customers don't write a review on their own: it simply doesn't occur to them.

Asking, at the right moment and with a direct link, makes the difference. Here's how to do it well, what isn't allowed and some example messages.

When to ask for a review

  • Right after a good experience: when delivering a project, closing a solved ticket or when the order arrives.
  • When the customer thanks you: it's the most natural moment.
  • In the email or chat where you're already talking, not on a new channel.
  • Just once, with one reminder at most. Pushing annoys people.
What the rules forbid:Google forbids offering incentives (discounts, gifts or payments) in exchange for a review, asking only happy customers for reviews, pressuring customers on site, asking reviews to say something specific and setting review quotas for staff. In the US, the FTC rule in force since October 2024 also bans fake reviews and incentives for reviews that express a particular opinion. You can ask all your customers for honest reviews.
