NexoPad for Windows records your screen as a video. Press Alt + 3, pick the area and record for up to 5 minutes. You can record your voice and the PC sound, and draw arrows or boxes on top while you record.

When you finish, trim the start or the end and save it as an MP4 video or as a GIF. It's handy for explaining something to a client, reporting a bug with every step or recording a short tutorial. It works the same on every plan.

1How to start recording

W

With the shortcut

Press Alt + 3 in any program. You can change it in Preferences › Screenshots › Key to record the screen. While you record, the same key stops the recording.

F

From a screenshot

Press Alt + 2 and choose Record in the bar at the top, next to Area, Window and Screen.

From the icon by the clock

Right-click the NexoPad icon next to the clock and click the Record card.

2Recording step by step

1

Choose what to record

Drag to mark an area or click a window. Screen, in the bar at the top, records the whole screen. Esc cancels.

2

Wait for the countdown

You'll see “Starting in 3…” and a red frame around the area. Neither the frame nor the small bar show up in the video.

3

Record

The small bar shows the time, up to a maximum of 5:00.

  • Pause and Resume: stop for a moment and carry on in the same video.
  • Microphone and PC sound: record your voice and whatever is playing on the PC.
  • Draw: mark anything you want to point out.
  • Cancel without saving (Esc): throws the recording away.
4

Stop the recording

Click Stop or press the record key. At 5 minutes it stops on its own. The Your recording window opens.

While recording: microphone, PC sound, Draw, Pause and Stop. What you draw appears in the video.

3Your voice and the PC sound

  • Microphone: records your voice. Click the button to turn it on or off; a small bar shows the level while you talk.
  • PC sound: records whatever is playing on your computer, like a video or a call.
  • Both start off the first time, and NexoPad remembers your choice for next time. You can also turn them on during the countdown.
  • If both are on, they are mixed into the same video. If you see “Could not open the sound”, check in Windows that the microphone is connected and allowed for NexoPad.

4Drawing while you record

  • Click Draw in the small bar and choose Pen, Arrow or Rectangle, in red, amber or blue. What you draw shows up in the video.
  • Drawings disappear on their own after 4 seconds. With Keep drawings, they stay until you click Clear.
  • While you draw, the mouse doesn't reach your programs. Press Esc or click Draw again to use them again without stopping the recording.

5Trim, copy or save

In “Your recording”What it does
Play / PauseWatch the video before you save it.
Blue edgesDrag them to cut what you don't need at the start or the end.

CopyCopies the file: paste it with Ctrl + V into WhatsApp, Teams, Outlook or a folder.
SaveSaves it in your screenshots folder.
Save as…You choose the folder and the name.
DiscardDeletes it, after asking you first.
In Your recording you trim with the blue edges, choose MP4 or GIF and copy or save it.

Tip

Sending it in a chat? A GIF plays without opening anything and is small. If people need to hear your voice, use MP4.

6Where your videos go

The videos you save show up on the NexoPad Screenshots page and in the recent screenshots of the clock menu, with their length. Click Play to watch them in the Windows player.

They are saved in the same folder as your screenshots, with their name. Until you save it, the video stays in the NexoPad data folder on your PC.

7Privacy

  • NexoPad only records when you start it, and the red frame always shows you which area is being recorded.
  • The microphone and the PC sound are only used if you turn them on.
  • Videos are created and saved on your PC. They are never uploaded to our servers.

8FAQ

How long can a recording be?

Up to 5 minutes. When it gets there, it stops on its own and “Your recording” opens. A GIF uses at most the first 30 seconds of the trimmed clip.

Why doesn't the GIF have sound?

Because the GIF format doesn't support sound. If you want it to be heard, save it as MP4.

Can I record with my webcam?

No. NexoPad records the screen, your voice and the PC sound, but not the webcam.

Is screen recording a paid feature?

No. It works the same on every plan, including the free one.

Can I change the Alt + 3 key?

Yes, in Preferences › Screenshots › Key to record the screen.

Don't have NexoPad for Windows yet?

It is free on the Microsoft Store. Install it and record your first video with Alt+3.
